2023 U.S Open Preview & Picks The 123rd U.S Open bring us to Los Angeles Country Club for the first major ever held at the
The WGC Dell Match Play event featured 64 of the world’s top golfers competing in a match play format. The only Match Play Style Tournament of the year and also the last one for the foreseeable future as the PGA Tour has decided to move away from this tournament. 🙁
Match play is a different format than traditional stroke play. In match play, two golfers play against each other in a head-to-head competition where the winner is determined by who wins the most holes over the course of the round. The golfer with the lowest score on each hole wins that hole and earns a point, with a half-point awarded for tied holes. The golfer who wins the most holes overall is the winner of the match. The tournament began with 16 four-player round-robin groups, with each golfer playing three matches against the others in their group. The player with the best record in each group advances to the knockout stage, where they compete in single-elimination matches until a winner is crowned.
This year we saw the some of the big dawgs continue their success on the year like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlory and Sam Burns. We also saw some fail short, not make it past the group stage like Jon Rahm, Tony Finau & Colin Morikawa. Making the biggest move of the weekend was Mackenzie Hughes, who advanced to the Quarterfinal round after beating Max Homa. Unfortunately for Hughes he ran into this years champ. Let’s see how this weekend shook out! Also another no LIV event weekend. SMH
Before we get to it…….Congrats to one of Swindle Golf’s own, Mr. Jonah Owenby for taking the crown in this years Swindle Golf Bracket! See the full bracket here
Back into the winners circle for the 5th time in his career Sam Burns takes down an impressive field to take home this years Trophy. With an impressive 3-0 record in his group play, Burns started his first knockout round facing the 4 seed in Patrick Cantlay. With a clutch shot on the 17th hole, Burns sealed Cantlay’s fate in this tournament with a birdie. After defeating Cantlay, Burns handled the biggest tournament surprise in Mackenzie Hughes. Making quick work of Hughes, Sam Burns had to take on the reigning champ, Scottie Scheffler. After 18 Holes, they were still all square. 3 playoff holes later, Burns would make a practical tap in birdie to give Scheffler the L. In the Championship round, Burns turned it up another 7 notches. Cameron Young stood no chance as he got routed by Sam Burns as Burns won the match with 5 holes left to play. Well done Sam! Impeccable timing with golf’s first major of the year in 2 weeks!

This 375 Yard drive…….left Rory less than 5 foot for Eagle. Wow! After Rory was struggling with his driver in weeks prior, he shortened his driver length half an inch. That little change paid big dividends as not only did he drive the ball with power & accuracy, he finished in a strong 3rd place this weekend. Guess I’ll be shortening my driver length half an inch this weekend too.
One for the Books. This Match Play format will be the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. With current LIV Tour Threat and a changing schedule in the 2024 PGA Tour season, this was one of the tournaments that will get lost in the shuffle. The PGA Tour wants to move to more elevated events with no cut which is a similar rule that happens on the LIV Tour. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with less players competing in the field but having guaranteed money. Safe to say Sam Burns is THE Match Play guy on Tour now.
This is becoming a more popular theme as we continue throughout this PGA Tour season. These Mid-Round Interviews are picking up in popularity with the players but more importantly the fans! With the success of Netflix’s “Full Swing”, the PGA Tour and it’s players seem willing to continue the deeper dive into the players, not only off the course but during competition as well. See what Rory had to say this weekend during his interview.
